Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cream shortening and
sugar together. Add milk. Sift salt, baking
powder, baking soda and flour together. Add to
creamed mixture. Add egg and vanilla.

Roll out on floured board and make circles. On
bottom circle place 1 tsp of filling in middle.
Cover and crimp edges of top circle. Bake on
prepared baking sheet for 10 minutes.

For filling, mix flour and sugar. Add water,
raisins and simmer for 5 minutes. Let cool.
|

|
......for fig tarts, replace the filling with fig
preserves and increase the size of the circles of
dough to the size of tea saucers. Place several
tablespoons preserves on one side of the circle
then fold over the other half. Crimp edges with
fork, poke several holes in the top of the pastry
with the fork and and bake as directed.
