Cook 1/2 chopped onion in a pot with 3 tbsp olive oil, about 5 minutes. Add 1 1/4 lbs trimmed green beans, a 15-oz can crushed tomatoes, 1 1/4 cups water, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper and a pinch of cinnamon. Partially cover and simmer, 35 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
