Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs and beat. In a separate bowl, make a paste of the red food coloring and the cocoa. Add salt, buttermilk, flour and vanilla and blend.
In a small bowl, mix the vinegar and soda together. Blend everything into the first mixture.
Pour into two greased and floured cake pans, and bake at 350 degrees until toothpick comes out clean. (Sorry, Grandma was a little vague on baking times.) Split layers using thread in a sawing motion. Allow to cool.
