Combine flour, sugar, soda, and salt in mixing bowl and stir well.
Make well in mixture; pour in buttermilk, stir until blended, stiff dough.
Put dough out on floured board. Kneed 5 times and form into ball. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and pat to a 8 inch circle 1 1/2 inch thick. With floured knife make a cross and spread with butter.
Bake 375 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until golden and loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
