In microwavable glass bowl or 4-cup glass pyrex measuring cup, mix sugar, cornstarch and salt. Stir in milk.

Microwave on 80% power for 7 minutes, stopping midway to stir well.

Put egg yolks in small bowl and beat with a fork. Add small amount of hot mixture into the yolks, stirring while you do. Then add egg yolk mixture to glass bowl slowly, stirring while adding.

Microwave on full power for for 1 to 1/2 minutes until thickened. Remove from microwave. Stir in butter and vanilla and mix well. Pour into pre-cooked pie crust or bowls. Chill

|
For banana cream pie, slice banana into baked crust then pour filling over. For coconut cream, mix coconut into the filling.
