Cream butter and sugar. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together. Gradually add flour mixture to creamed butter and sugar. Add vanilla and nuts. Roll in one inch balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Mash each slightly. Bake in 375 degree oven until lightly browned. If desired, roll in powdered sugar.
