1.In a saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until butter is melted. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla. Cool for 15 minutes; stir in egg.
2.In a seperate dish, combine flour, cocoa and salt; add to butter mixture. Fold in walnuts. cover and chill for 30 minutes or utnil easy to handle.
3.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with a floured 3 inch heart shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
4.Bake for 9-10 minutes or until edges are firm. Coll on wire racks.
5.Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips and shortening on low heat in a microwave, stirring until smooth. Dip half of each cooled heart into chocolate mixture; allowing excess to drop off. Dip edges of chocolate side into ground walnuts. Place on waxed paper andlet stand until topping is set.
