Mix cocoa and sugar in a saucepan. Add syrup, butter, and milk and mix thoroughly. Cook over low heat, stirring until sugar is melted. Remove from heatwhen a sample of the mixture forms a medium hard ball in cold water. Cool without stirring; add salt and vanilla and beat until creamy. Pour into a buttered platter and cut into squares when hard. Chopped nuts and raisins or flaked coconut may be added if desired.
