Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 23 cm cake tin
with baking paper. Put the dates and water into a
saucepan. Bring slowly to the boil and then stir
in the baking soda. Set aside to cool slightly.
Cream the butter and sugar together until light
and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time. add date
mixture. Sift flour into the mixture and fold
through. (The mixture will have the consistency of
batter.) Pour into prepared cake tin and cook for
30-40 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the
centre of the cake comes out clean.
