Preheat oven to 350. Break bread up into bite
sized pieces and put into an 8 inch square pan.
Sprinkle with raisins if you want them. In a
medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar,
cinnamon, and vanilla. Beat until well mixed. Pour
over bread, and lightly push down with a fork
until bread is covered and soaking up the egg
mixture. Bake in the preheated oven for 45
minutes, or until the top springs back when
lightly tapped.
For sauce, In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup
sugar, cornstarch, 1 cup hot water, 2 tablespoons
butter, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Cook on
medium heat until bubbling and thickened. Stir
constantly to avoid scorching. Serve with bread
pudding.
