Place sweet potatoes in slow cooker. Add chicken broth, onions and black pepper. Cook on low 6 - 8 hours until potatoes are tender.
Scoop out potatoes and some of the liquid and puree in blender. Return puree to slow cooker and stir in half-and-half and chives. Cook for additional 30 minutes on low.
Spoon into bowls and top with a dollop of sour cream. For a sweeter, candied yam taste add a small amount brown sugar and cinnamon to bowl and mix well.
