Sift flour, then measure, add first amount of sugar to flour, and sift 3 times. Set aside. Measure egg whites, place in rounded bottom bowl. Beat until foamy. Add salt and cream of tartar. Beat all together until peaks stand straight up. Don't over beat.
Add 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 at a time, sprinkle on top and fold in. Lightly fold vanilla in. Fold in 1/4 cup of flour and sugar at a time.
Pour into ungreased tube pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, let stand until completely cool.
When cool, loosen cake from side with a spatual and gently remove. Cover tightly and store upside down.
