Sift flour, then meausre. Set aside. Stir shortening to soften. Add 1 3/4 cup sugar gradually and cream together thoroughly. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each. Blend in vanilla and melted chocolate.

Add flour and milk alternately, beginning and ending with flour. Add flour in four portions, milk in three. Beat until blended after each addition. Beat egg whites until they form soft, fold-over peaks. Add 1/4 cup sugar in two portions, beating after each until blended. Stir beaten egg whites into chocolate mixtue until blended.
