What is a Hardtack?
It was a plain water and flour biscuit, about 3 inches by 2 1/2 inches. The daily ration was nine to ten biscuits per man. Some biscuits were so hard a man could not break them with his teeth. These had to be soaked to be eaten. If they got wet in shipment, they would be moldy or contain maggots and when a man broke his hardtack open, he often saw maggots squirming inside.
