Brown the ground beef in a medium saucepan and remove the excess fat from the pan before
proceeding. (Not that I ever had had to do that with beef from South Main Grocery-so don't skimp on the quality of the meat) Add the onion to the ground beef and cook until onions are translucent. Add the
tomatoes, carrots, celery, thyme and pepper to the beef and brown for an additional 5
minutes. Add the water, consomme, tomato soup, bay leaf (whole) and barley. Cover and
simmer for 45 minutes (minimum. Allow to sit for best results.
