Cream together sugar and butter. Add egg, vanilla and date mixture. Stir in dry ingredients, then cherries and nuts. Pour into large loaf pan and bake at 350o for about 45 minutes.
Combine ingredients and boil for 3 minutes. Pour over warm cake. Return cake to oven and bake for another 15-20 minutes.
This recipe is from Ethyl Davidson, a wonderful cook and long-time friend in Vermont. Among other things, she taught me the fine art of hanging wallpaper. I miss her energy, intelligence and sincere honesty. This makes a lovely rich cake and is a great alternative to fruitcake as a Christmas gift.
