Put beans and water in a cooking pot. Bring to a boil and boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand for 1 hour. Chop onion and add to beans. Cover and simmer for 1 and 1/2 to 2 and 1/2 hours or until beans are soft. Add salt. Chop ham into bite-size pieces and stir into soup. For thinner soup add more water. If use ham bone, remove the bone and cut off the meat for the soup.
