1 cup margarine, scant (BOTTOM LAYER)
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
generous pinch of salt
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
7 ounces halvah (FILLING)
4 tablespoons sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
4 tablespoons water
1/2 cup margarine
3 tablespoons cognac
4 egg whites (TOPPING)
1/2 cup sugar
3 1/2 ounces shredded coconut

Cream margarine with sugar. Stir in egg yolks. Add salt, flour, and baking powder. Spread evenly into a lined 9x13-inch baking pan.
In a saucepan cook all filling ingredients except margarine and cognac until halvah is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in margarine and cognac. Spread over bottom layer.
In a mixing bowl, beat egg whites for topping until frothy. Gradually add sugar and continue beating until mixture can stand up in stiff peaks. Gently fold in coconut. Spread topping on top of filling and bake in a preheated 350 degree Fahrenheit (180 degree Celsius) oven for 45 minutes. When cool, cut into squares with a sharp, warm knife.
