     Grandma's Gingerbread

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
1 cup dark molasses
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 salt
1 cup hot water

Cream butter or lard (Crisco) and sugar. Add beaten eggs and molasses. Then add dry ingredients which have been sifted together. Add hot water last and beat until smooth. The batter will be soft, but makes a fine cake. Bake in a greased shallow pan (8 or 9 inch) for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
Serving Suggestions
Serve with either shifted confectioners sugar or whipped cream
