Roughly chop the celery, carrots, onions and bell peppers. Put them in a food processor. slowly add the olive oiil and pulse until fine but not liquified.
Heat a heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat, add the vegetable mixture and saute for 5 minutes. Be careful to not scortch the mixture.
Add the garlic, basil, oregnao, salt and pepper. Saute for 3 minutes to help release the flavors. Add the crushed tomotoes and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Stir occassionally.
