In a large saucepan heat oil over medium-high heat. Slice onions, carrots, and garlic. Combine in saucepan with sugar. Cook 15 min. covered or until onions are golden.

Stir in flour. Cook 1 min. longer. Add broth, sherry, and thyme. Simmer 10 min. Season with salt and pepper.

Preheat broiler to high. Place 4 oven-safe soup bowls on a baking shet. Ladle soup into bowls. Top each with a baguette slice and 1/2 c. of each cheese.

|
Broil 2-3 min. or until cheese is golden and bubbly. Remove from oven and serve immediately.
