Combine sugar, Karo, water and salt in a 2 quart saucepan. Stir while bringing to a boil, cook to hard ball stage (250 degrees) with out stirring. Remove from heat.
Beat egg whites until stiff. Pour hot syrup mixture over egg whites. Beat constantly at high speed about 5 minutes. Add vanilla, beat until mixture forms soft peaks and begins to loose gloss.
Add nuts if desired.
Drop on wax paper.
