Add vinegar to soda (it foams). Cream shortening,sugar and eggs. Make paste of coloring and cocoa and add to mixture. Add buttermilk with salt alternating with flour. Add vanilla. Fold in soda and vinegar. Beat as you do any other cake recipe.

Pour into 2- 8or9 inch greased caked pans pound air bubbles out
Bake 350 30-35 mins

Frosting (I usually double)
3 tbls. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup butter

Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool. Cream suga,butter and vanilla until fluffy. Blend creamed mixture into cooled flour and milk. DO NOT BEAT!
Sice cake into 4 layers and frost. Should be refrigeratored.
