Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, sift flour, baking soda and salt together. In a small bowl, mix sugar, eggs and vanilla together. Add dry ingredients to wet and blend. Pour into a greased 9x13 inch pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes (until top is golden brown).
Prepare frosting by creaming butter, cream cheese and vanilla. Gradually add sifted confectioner's sugar. Frost cake while still warm. Sprinkle with nuts, if desired.
