In a large bowl mix together 4 cups flour, the spices, and 1/2 tsp. salt and set aside. Melt shortening in a medium saucepan over low heat, add corn syrup and sugar; stir until dissolved. Remove from heat. With heavy-duty mixer on low, gradually beat syrup mixture into the flour mixture. Beat in 2 cups flour on medium speed. Mix in remaining flour until with wooden spoon or hands to form a stiff, not sticky, dough. Divide dough into four parts; if not using immediately, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate up to a week. Let chilled dough come to room temp. before rolling. (about 3 hours)
