Melt in 1 cup sugar in heavy skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently. Add 1/2 cup boiling water; mix well. Cream butter in mixer bowl. Add 1 1/2 cups sugar gradually, beating until light and fluffy. Add eggs yokes, milk and 2 cups flour, beating well after each addition. Beat for 5 minutes. Add enough burnt sugar syrup to make of desired color. Add 1/2 cup flour, baking powder and vanilla; mix well.
