Heart oil in a deep fryer or 4 quart pot to 365. Rinse fish, pat dry,
and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp salt and pepper.
Combine flour, garlic powder, paprika, and remaining tsp of salt
and pepper in a bowl. Stir in egg, and gradually mix in beer until a
thin batter forms.
Dip fish into batter, letting excess drip off, and transfer 2 at a time
to oil. Cook fish, turning once, until both sides are golden brown,
about 5 minutes total. Drain on paper towels. Bring oil back to 365
between batches.
