Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9x9 baking pan.
Brown ground beef and onions in a skillet, drain. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix well.
In a bowl, mix cottage cheese, sour cream or yogurt and egg whites.
Put hash brown potatoes in bottom of baking dish. Spread meat mixture on top, then top with cottage cheese mixture. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes then add shredded cheese over the top and cook for 15 minutes more. Let sit for 5 minutes.
Top with chopped pickles and tomato. Serve with salad and thousand island dressing.
