Make topping to have it ready to put on batter.
Mix the shortening, dates, and boiling water.
Add salt, sugar and beaten egg. Then add
flour/baking soda mix. Add 1 tsp vanilla and 1/2
cup chopped nuts. Pour into greased 8 x 8 x 2
pan. Cover the batter with the topping. Bake at
350 degrees for an hour.
