     Split Pea Soup

Ingredients
5-7 cups of water
1 (16 oz) package of dried split peas, rinsed and sorted (2 1/4 c.)
1 t. salt
1/4 t. pepper
3 medium carrots (cut into 1/4 in. slices)
2 stalks of celery (finely chopped)
1 medium onion, chopped
3 large cloves of garlic
1 t. parsley
 
1 bay leaf
1 ham bone or 2 lbs ham shanks or 2 lbs smoked pork hocks (I used bacon)

Instructions
Mix all ingredients except ham in 5 qt slow cooker, then add ham. Cover and cook on low heat 6-7 hrs or until peas are tender Remove ham from cooker; place on cutting board. Pull meat from bones, using 2 forks; discard bones and skin. Stir ham into soup. Stir well before serving.
If you used bacon. Fry it and cut it into small pieces before mixing it in with the rest of the ingredients.
