Fry bacon and set aside. Cook onion and celery in 3 Tbl bacon grease until soft.
Remove from heat, add clam juice, potatoes and spices. Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are soft. Remove from heat and stir in cream and chicken broth; add the crumbled bacon. Cook until hot - DO NOT BOIL. Add clams just before serving to heat them through. They are already cooked. Adding last keeps them from getting rubbery.
