2 Oranges, quartered - peeled, IF you would like your cider less tart
1/2 c Sweetener of your choice, suggested- brown sugar, maple syrup
4 cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon whole cloves
16 c Water - the base of the cider
Optional extra spices- 1 tsp whole allspice, 1 whole nutmeg, 1 inch fresh ginger
Instructions
Add apples, oranges, and spices to a large stockpot. Then
cover with water, leaving at least an inch or two of space at
the top of the stockpot.
Heat the cider over high heat until it reached a simmer.
Then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for
about two hours or until the apples are completely soft.
Using a potato masher or a wooden spoon, take a minute to
mash all of the apples and oranges against the side of the
stockpot to release more of their flavors. Then cover and let
the cider simmer a bit longer.
Then, using a fine-mesh strainer or a cheesecloth, strain
out all of the solids (apples, oranges, spices) pressing then
against the strainer to release all of the juices. Discard the
solids (or save for smoothies). This will probably take five
minutes.
Stir in the sweetener of your choice to your liking.
Serve warm!
For extra presentation, add a few fresh orange slices and
cinnamon sticks back to the stock pot for pretty serving.
(can be made in a crock-pot as well!)
