Add oil, onion, and bay leaves to pot and saute
until onions are soft. Add garlic and go another
couple minutes. Add water and bouillon and bring
to a boil until bouillon dissolves.
Add tomatoes and juices, tomato paste, and basil.
Bring back to a boil for a couple minutes, then
reduce heat and simmer 30-40 minutes to desired
consistency. Remove bay leaves. Stir in butter (and milk/ cream if
using) and taste for salt.
This can be blended if desired, but not necessary.
Serve topped with shredded cheddar, croutons, or
fresh basil.
NOTE- Celery seed, red pepper flakes, or diced red
bell pepper might be good additions.
