Mix sugar, cornstarch, and salt in saucepan.
Gradually stir in milk.
Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until thick and boiling.
Boil 1 minute.
Remove from heat.

Gradually stir half of mixture into egg yolks.
THEN, add this egg mixture and chocolate into remaining hot mixture in saucepan.
Boil 1 minute more, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat.

Blend in butter and vanilla.
Pour immediately into baked pie shell.
Finish with meringue.
Let cool at room temperature and then refrigerate.
NO meringue? Just let cool and add CoolWhip on top before refrigerating.

Meringue- Beat all ingredients with mixer until egg whites are stiff. Cook at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Let cool 1 hour before refrigerating.
