     Classic Lasagna

Ingredients
1 medium onion
2 - 6 oz. cans tomato paste
1 - 14oz. can diced tomatoes
1/2 lb. ground beef
1 pkg. Italian sausage
15-20 oz. ricotta cheese
1 egg
3 c. shredded mozzarella cheese
1 tbs. fennel seed
 
1 tsp. garlic
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. oregano
12 lasagna noodles
parmesan cheese to taste
1/4 c. sugar (optional)
1/4 tsp. salt (optional)

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Brown ground beef, sausage, and onion; drain. Mix in tomato paste and diced tomatoes. Add fennel seed, garlic, basil, and oregano. If mix seems too thick, add water to desired consistency (not too runny). Add sugar and simmer on low for 10 minutes.
Cook noodles and drain. Put one layer in bottom of 9X13 dish. Spread with half of meat mixture. Mix egg and ricotta cheese. Spread half of ricotta/egg mixture over meat and sprinkle with one cup mozzarella cheese then very little parmesan cheese. Repeat with noodles, meat, ricotta/egg, and mozarella cheese. Cover with noodles and last cup of mozzarella cheese.
Bake for 30-40 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
