Preheat Oven to 400 degrees.
Mix Sugar, Shortening, Egg, and Vanilla together.
Mix Dry ingredients together. Add to Butter and Sugar Mixture. Mix till Fluffy.
Color 1/2 Dough red or green. Roll into long 1/2 inch 'snake' shapes. Twist colored and uncolored dough together. Pinch off into 3-4 inch pieces and shape into cane shapes. Place on cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 Min. Do not let brown.
Remove immediately from sheet.
