Fry ground meat until done, but not brown; season lightly with salt and pepper. Remove as much grease as possible; add cream of mushroom soup. Grease 9 x 12 inch pan with butter. Slice potatoes into baking dish; slice carrots over the top of potatoes. Spread meat mixture over top of carrots; place cheese slices over meat. Cover with foil; bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check if potatoes are done, if not, bake longer.
