     Perfect Split Pea Soup

Servings   about 6 cups

Ingredients
1 pound of green split peas
1/2 cup barley
1 onion, diced
1 carrot, shredded
1/2 tsp. pepper
3/4 pound diced ham or ham bone
8 cups water (enough to cover ham bone)
1/2 tsp. baking soda
 

Instructions
In a soup pot, combine the split peas, barley, onion, carrot, pepper, ham (or ham bone) and water. Simmer for 1 and 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove meat from bone and add to pot. Add the baking soda. Stir until the soup thickens, 8 to 10 minutes.
