Mix dry ingredients together. Blend in shortening until mixture is coarse and grainy.

Stir in buttermilk with a fork (do not overmix!). Put on a floured surface and knead just a few times.

Pat dough out about 1/2 inch thick. Cut with biscuit cutter or a glass (being careful not to handle dough too much, or it will be tough).

Using a heavy cast iron skillet, place 1 Tbsp shortening in it, and put in oven for about 7 minutes. Remove from oven and put biscuits inside pan. Turn each once in oil and bake at 500 degrees F for 10 minutes.
