Add sugar, salt and yeast to boiling water, stirring until dissolved. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in beaten egg. Beat in 3 1/2 cups of flour. When batter is smooth, add shortening. Gradually add reamining flour, working in with hands. Turn dough onto floured board and work 10 minutes. Return to bowl, let rise to double in size. 2-4 hours. Roll in balls, place on greased pan and let rise in size again. (double) Bake in 425 degree over for 15 minutes.
