Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Combine flour, brown sugar and butter or margarine in large bowl. Blend at low speed until fine crumbs form. Stir in nuts. Press 2-3/4 cups mixture firmly into ungreased 13 by 9 inch or 15 by 10 inch pan.
To remaining crumb mixture add cinnamon, soda, salt, sour cream, vanilla and egg. Combine in large bowl and stir in apples. Spoon evenly over crumb base.
Bake at 350 degrees or until tooth pick inserted in center comes clean. Cool before cutting. Top with whipped cream or sugar, if desired.
