Mix first three dry ingredients in top of double boiler. Add hot milk stirring constantly until thick. Beat egg yolks and add to mixture continuing to stir until very thick. Add butter and vanilla.

Pour into browned, cooled pie crust. Add meringue-

|
Beat egg whites and tartar until stiff. Add vanilla and continue beating. Add sugar VERY slowly while beating at high speed until all is absorbed. Smear over top of pie.

Preheat oven to 325 and bake for 10 minutes until meringue is browned.
