Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease & flour two 9-inch cake pans. Cream 2 sticks butter & 1 cup granulated sugar together until light & fluffy. Add 2 eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Add mashed bananas.

Sift the flour, salt & baking soda. Add to the banana mixture. Add the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Mix for 1 minute. Pour into prepared pans & bake for 25 minutes. Let cool for 2 hours.

Prepare the cream cheese icing as the cake cools. Cream together the cream cheese and 6 tablespoons of butter. Slowly add the confectioners sugar. Mix until free of lumps. Stir in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Place 1 cake layer on a cake plate & frost with cream cheese icing. Arrange slices of bananas cut crossways over the frosting. Cover w/second layer and frost top & sides of the cake. Sprinkle top of cake w/ chopped walnuts.
