Preheat oven to 350 degrees F., & Prep baking pans. In large bowl cream shortening until light, slowly adding sugar, & beat until fluffy. Add vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients together in smaller bowl. Add 1 T of dry ingredients to shortening mixture, & mix well. Then add 1 T. milk to shortening mix, & mix well. Continue adding alternately, & mix well after each, until all are combnined. In another bowl mix egg whites until fluffy. Slowly add 1/2 c sugar & beat well until stiff & shiney peaks form Gently fold egg whites into mix, until blended. Don't overmix. Place into prepared pans. Bake approximately 20 minutes, & invert on wire rack & remove pan. Cool completely. Yields 6 cups, & serves 20.
