2 loaves Italian peasant bread, cut into 1 inch slices
1 lb. fully cooked, finely chopped mild Italian sausage
3 crisp, sweet apples, cored and sliced into very thin rounds
2-1/2 c. grated Grana Padano cheese
Instructions
Lightly butter a 4 quart casserole. In medium bowl, beat together eggs, half & half, and nutmeg. Soak each slice of bread inthe custard until fully saturated. Arrange 1/3 of the slices in the bottom of the prepared dish.
Top the bread layer with half od the sausage, half of the apples, and 1 c. of the cheese. Layer another 1/3 of the bread over the cheese and repeat the layers, ending with bread on top.
Pour remaining custard over the top of the casserole. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 c. cheeese. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight.
When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Bake uncovered for 1 to 1-1/2 hours, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
