Cream shortning until light and add sugar gradually using low speed on mixer.
Add egg yolks on at a time.
Melt chocolate with hot water in top of double boiler. Allow to cool, but keep warm until ready to use.

Mix soda and buttermilk.
Add alternately to creamed mixtute, scrape sides of bowl.
Add vanilla and melted chocolate.
Fold in beaten egg whites.
Batter is thin.

Can be 1 13x9 sheet or 2 or 3 8 inch rounds.
Cake pans must be 2 inch deep. Line bottom of pan with waxed paper which has been creased with shortning.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 50 to 60 mins for sheet cake or 25 to 30 mins for rounds.
Cool 5 mins and ice.
