     Aunt Polly's Chocolate Chip Bars

1 cup shortening (Polly often uses 1/2 cup margarine and 1/2 cup shortening)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tablespoon cold water
1 tablespoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt (or 1/4)
1 cup chocolate chips (6 oz)
3 egg whites
1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup ground salted peanuts (or pecans or walnuts)

Throughly mix together the first nine ingredients. Spread into a 9x13 cake pan (GREASE THE PAN IF IT IS NOT A NON-STICK PAN)
Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over this dough.
Beat egg whites stiff and slowly add and beat in the cup of brown sugar. Spread over chocolate chips.
Sprinkle the nuts over the meringue.
