Mix cake mix according to directions on box. Spread half of batter in 13x9 and bake at 350 for 20 min.
Melt caramels with butter and milk.
Remove cake from oven and poke holes all over it. While still hot, spread caramel mixture over the cake allowing it to run down in the holes. Sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans over the caramel.
Pour the rest of the cake batter over the top.
Bake at 250 for 20 min. then turn heat up to 350 and bake for another 10 min.
Top with cool whip or chocolate icing.
