     German Apple Cake (Versunkerner Apfelkuchen)

Category   Desserts - Breads
Sub Category   None
Servings   8-10 Slices

Ingredients
3 Apples, peeled and cut into slices
1/2 cup of nondairy butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 unsweetened apple sauce
1 1/2 cups unbleaches all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
Topping - Ingredients
1/4 cup of brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 in a springform pan. Lightly grease a 9-inch springform pan. To make this cake, cook the apples in a little bit of water on the stove until they are just a little soft, but not mushy. Set aside.
With an electric hand mixer or by hand using a wooden spoon, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the applesauce and milk. Finally, add the flour and baking powder, stir until just combined.
Add the batter to the pan and arrange the apple slices, from the cooked apples on top of the cake.
To make the topping, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and ginger and sprinkle over the apples, covering the top of the cake. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool for 15 minutes before you start unmolding from the cake pan.
