In Memory of a Dear Man, My Father-In-Law, Ahmed Baakrime. by Khadi Madama-Baakrime The first time I ever met my father-in-law, Ahmed Baakrime was during Ramadan of 2001 during his visit to the United States. I loved him instantly. He had a very special personality. Quiet, yet friendly and warm. It was obvious at first meeting with him that he was a man of very deep spiritual presence. He had a light that shined from within him. I knew that I was with someone very close to Allah. He loved to talk and tell stories and he was very polite with me. He was concerned that my Arabic is limited and made sure that someone translated for me because he had thoughts that were important to him that he wanted to share with his family.
The last time I saw him, he embraced me warmly and told me that whenever I come to Morocco, I will be welcomed as a member of the family. I remember that I was very sad to see him go and I cried as Hafid drove him and Mima back to Connecticut. I think of him often because I know that he was not only my father in law, but he was also kind and caring towards me. Sometimes I feel like he is here with me and so throughout the year I do what I can with Hafid to keep his memory alive.
Since he passed away, Hafid and I have donated Moroccan food to the local school in memory of Ahmed. We have also donated a book on Morocco to our local library with a special notice inside the book so people will know we loved him. We have also contributed to two other national cooking festivals with Moroccan recipes created with his name. I know that he is smiling down on us from heaven. In the short time that I knew him he left an unforgettable mark in my heart. I love you and I miss you N'Sibi, Ahmed El Hajj.
